In Noise Reduction sample a section of the hiss between words, get the noise sample, then run NR thru the audio. Try looping playback of the selection to make sure its an accurate 4-beat loop. Load into Sound Forge the song that you want to determine the BPM of and highlight a 4-beat section of the song. Of course, if a record sounds bad to start with (like bacon frying) the results probably won't be great. Actually, you can determine the BPM of a song in Sound Forge using the Edit Tempo function. Those media suites have lost their way and try to do too way much stuff and don't seem to do anything very good anymore other than take up space on your hard drive! I have used Sound Forge with the Noise Reduction plug-in before and it is very good if you know how to get the settings right. I'm sure it would be better than Nero or Roxio. I'm not saying you won't get good results, though. I don't think the less expensive software is as powerful as the professional version.
